Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Personal Care and Assisted Living?

Often the terms Personal Care and Assisted Living can be used interchangeably. However, the main difference between Personal Care and Assisted Living services is the amount of assistance needed for your loved one.

Typically, Personal Care residences are often seen as a combination of Independent Living and Assisted Living. Personal Care residents may need assistance with activities of daily living but still maintain an independent lifestyle in many ways.

Assisted Living communities are the best choice for residents who require a greater level of care beyond assistance with daily living. Residents often require frequent access to health care services.

Who qualifies for Personal Care?

Seniors whose health or well-being requires a higher level of support or those who would benefit from a healthier lifestyle and social engagement qualify for Personal Care. Most communities conduct a health assessment that follows state regulations to determine what level of care or assistance is best for each individual.

What kind of services does Personal Care provide?

Personal Care communities give older adults personalized care in a residential setting. Most senior living options – including Personal Care Living communities – provide services that include:

  • One to three meals a day
  • Medication monitoring
  • Personal care, including dressing and bathing
  • Housekeeping and laundry
  • Some medical services
  • Social and recreational activities
  • Care coordination
  • Mobility assistance
  • Complimentary transportation

Some communities offer Respite Care or Short-Term Stays. Additionally, some communities offer access to home care services for those who may need more assistance than is provided at the community but who are not yet ready for a skilled nursing care center.

What is the cost of personal care?

The Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2021 estimates the Owensboro area regional median monthly rate for Assisted Living is $3,088, which breaks down to around $102 per day, and may not include some support services that your loved one needs. The same survey says a private room in a nursing home will cost around $298 per day ($9,049 per month). Home health aide services average $125 per day.

Calumet Trace’s Personal Care services start at $3,300 with additional levels of care based on what your loved one needs to successfully navigate activities of daily living.

Who pays for Personal Care?

While your personal health insurance coverage continues and your pharmaceutical coverage continues, Medicare typically doesn’t pay for Personal Care.

Most Personal Care residents pay for this kind of care from their personal resources or with help from coverage provided by long-term care insurance. Veterans Aid and Attendance Benefits can help cover the cost for eligible Veterans and surviving spouses who are over age 65.
